Human Rights Group Calls for Investigation into Burkina Faso Massacre (Video)

Video footage circulating on social media appears to implicate government-allied militias in a recent civilian massacre in Burkina Faso, according to a report by Human Rights Watch. The organization has urged authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible.
Testimonies collected by the group suggest that security forces and allied militias conducted large-scale operations in the Solenzo countryside, targeting displaced members of the Fulani community. The attacks were described as apparent retaliation against the Fulani, whom the government has long accused of supporting militant groups.
Human Rights Watch stated that gruesome videos from the incident highlight a pattern of impunity for pro-government militias. The organization called for immediate action to end militia attacks on civilians and ensure accountability for atrocities such as those in Solenzo. The government of Burkina Faso has not issued a response to the allegations.
Burkina Faso, a landlocked nation in the Sahel region, has been experiencing escalating violence involving extremist groups and government forces. The country has been further destabilized by two military coups since 2022. Estimates indicate that over 60% of its territory is outside government control, more than 2.1 million people have been displaced, and nearly 6.5 million require humanitarian assistance.

Human Rights Watch, citing video analysis and local sources, reported that most victims of the Solenzo massacre appear to be ethnic Fulani. At least 58 people, including two children, are believed to have been killed.
Analysts attribute rising ethnic tensions to the junta’s strategy of militarization, including mass recruitment of civilians into poorly trained militia units. Data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project indicates that attacks on civilians have increased significantly since Capt. Ibrahim Traore took power.
The organization has documented widespread abuses by Burkina Faso’s armed forces and militias, including extrajudicial killings of Fulani civilians accused of supporting insurgents.
The full extent of the situation remains unclear, as rights groups report that the military leadership has imposed strict censorship. Dissenters risk abduction, imprisonment, or forced conscription, making independent verification of events increasingly difficult.
