Husband behind viral dress that broke internet admits he strangled wife
Keir Johnston, known for the viral sensation of the dress debate, has recently pleaded guilty to endangering his wife's life and admitted to strangling her in a "terrifying" attack, as reported by The Daily Record. At the High Court in Glasgow, Johnston, 38, faced charges related to the assault on his wife, Grace Johnston, leaving her in fear for her life but fortunately alive.
The incident occurred on the Isle of Colonsay, off Scotland's west coast, where Johnston resided. He has been remanded in custody until his sentencing next month, set for 6 June.
Johnston gained global fame due to "#TheDress" phenomenon, sparked by a photo of his mother-in-law's dress at their wedding in 2015, which divided opinions on its colors - black and blue or white and gold - and led to widespread internet discussions, including comments from celebrities like Kim Kardashian and a feature on Ellen DeGeneres's talk show.
However, behind this public image, the court heard disturbing details of Johnston's domestic abuse history and his wife's experiences of living in fear. According to Crown prosecutor Chris Macintosh, Grace felt trapped in a situation with no permanent police presence on the island, which exacerbated her fear.
The court proceedings revealed an incident where Johnston physically assaulted his wife after she refused to comply with his demands regarding a job interview. This led to an altercation where Johnston forcefully restrained and strangled her, causing her severe distress and injuries.
Acknowledging the severity of the crime, Lady Drummond denied Johnston bail and emphasized the gravity of his actions, stating that he had put his wife's life in danger in a terrifying manner. The status of their relationship following the incident remains unclear.
