Italian Teacher Suspended Over Online Content Challenges Decision
A 29-year-old Catholic infant school teacher in Italy has been suspended after it was discovered that she was also working as an OnlyFans content creator. The teacher, Elena Maraga, was identified by a parent who recognized her online and subsequently shared the information with others through social media and messaging platforms.
Following this revelation, the school near Treviso placed Maraga on leave, citing a misalignment between her extracurricular activities and the institution’s religious values. Maraga defended her decision, stating that her earnings as a teacher, approximately €1,200 per month, were insufficient to sustain her financially. She explained that she initially joined OnlyFans out of curiosity but quickly realized it could provide significantly higher income.
Maraga expressed that she is not ashamed of her work, emphasizing that she sees nothing wrong with celebrating femininity and sensuality. She noted that within a single day on the platform, she earned more than her monthly teaching salary.
Her case has sparked a broader debate in Italy regarding teachers' rights and personal freedoms. Trade unions have come to her defense, arguing that her dismissal lacks legal grounds. A representative from the Federation of Knowledge Workers in Treviso stated that employment contracts do not prohibit legal activities outside of work hours, making any termination unjustifiable. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has announced plans to review regulations regarding the use of social media by public employees.
Maraga, who holds a degree in Educational Sciences and has five years of experience in Catholic nursery schools, stated that while some parents disapprove of her online presence, others have expressed support. She continues to live with her parents, who are aware of her activities.
Although she has a passion for teaching, Maraga has indicated that she is unlikely to return to the profession. She has begun training for a career as a personal trainer, believing the fitness industry to be more accepting of her choices.
