John Fashanu Sues Nigerian Police for £100,000 Over Arrest

Former England international John Fashanu has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian police, seeking £100,000 in damages following his arrest on multiple charges, including criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, and trespassing.
The 62-year-old denies the allegations, which are linked to a land dispute involving investors who had agreed to pay over £500,000 for his 22-acre plot. His arrest reportedly occurred after he confronted contractors building a fence on the disputed land.
Fashanu claims that he, his wife Vivian, and their lawyer were subjected to "arrest, detention, and inhuman treatment" for approximately three hours on December 16. He further alleged that his rights were violated through "subsequent intermittent constraints on his personal liberty" and a "gross unconstitutional violation."
His lawyer, Mr. Chigbu, confirmed that all three individuals had met the necessary conditions for administrative bail and had been released.
Fashanu, a former player for Norwich City, Wimbledon, and Aston Villa, was a key figure in Wimbledon's 1988 FA Cup victory and earned two caps for England.
