Kano State House of Assembly Dethrones Emirs and Abolishes Emirates Created by Former Governor Ganduje

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State

In a significant move, the Kano State House of Assembly has dethroned the five Emirs and abolished the five Emirates in the state. This decision came after a special session presided over by Speaker RT. Hon. Jibrin Falgore.

During the session, the Assembly passed the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024 after it successfully scaled its third reading. The new bill sets aside all offices established under the previous law. Additionally, all district heads elevated or appointed under the repealed law are to revert to their former positions.

The Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment No. 2) Law, 2024, was sponsored by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, representing the Dala Constituency.

The law initially creating the five new emirates was signed by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on December 5, 2019. The governor had also approved amendments to the law on October 14, 2020, and April 11, 2023.

The repealed law established five distinct emirates: Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye. These emirates were given jurisdiction over specific local government areas, with Rano Emirate enjoying jurisdiction over 10 of the 44 local councils in the state.

The law was amended following the deposition of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi on March 9, 2020, to establish the emir of the Kano Emirate as the chairman of the council. Section 12 of the law allowed the governor to grade the office of an emir as first, second, or third class, subject to the approval of the House of Assembly.

A principal officer of the assembly, speaking anonymously, stated that "no force can stop the assembly from amending the law."
