Kenya: At Least 10 Protesters Killed in Nairobi Amid Protests Against New Tax Bill
At least 10 protesters were shot dead in Nairobi, Kenya, after police fired live rounds at demonstrators who stormed the parliament compound following the passing of a controversial finance bill, Reuters reports.
On Tuesday, thousands of protesters took to the streets, demanding that politicians vote against the new taxes proposed in the finance bill. However, after the bill was approved, tensions escalated, and the parliament compound was breached, with fires reported within the building.
A paramedic informed Reuters that at least 50 people were also injured by gunfire during the protests. The newly passed bill will introduce several new taxes, including an eco-levy that will increase the price of goods such as period products and diapers. Notably, a proposal to tax bread was removed from the bill following significant public outcry.
