Kidnapped Nigerian university students rescued
Nigerian security forces successfully rescued students who were kidnapped from a university in northern Kogi state, along with other victims held by the abductors, as confirmed by the army and state government on Sunday.
Kogi's information commissioner, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, stated that security forces engaged in a shootout with the armed gang responsible for the abduction at Confluence University of Science and Technology on Thursday.
The state had sought assistance from local hunters familiar with the terrain, resulting in a confrontation where a security agent and a hunter sustained injuries.
In a separate statement, the Nigerian army reported that troops, along with other security agencies and local vigilantes, engaged in a "fierce firefight" with the kidnappers. The army's superior firepower compelled the kidnappers to abandon nine of the abducted students, who were subsequently rescued.
These coordinated efforts highlight the determination of Nigerian authorities to combat kidnappings and ensure the safety of citizens.
