Nigeria secured a 4-2 victory over South Africa on penalties after regulation and extra time ended 1-1.
Sources close to the deceased, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Abdullahi went to a sports center in the Sango area where he began feeling unwell.
According to one of the sources, “The Deputy Bursar watched the Nigeria/South Africa match from start to finish, including the extra time until the penalty kicks began. He complained of dizziness and decided to head home to rest, unaware that his blood pressure had risen."
“Upon reaching home, he collapsed and was swiftly taken to a private hospital in Sango. He was later referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where, unfortunately, he passed away before receiving medical attention."
“He was laid to rest on Thursday morning per Islamic rites.”
The university’s Director of Information, Dr. Saedat Aliyu, confirmed Abdullahi’s demise, noting that the cause of death was yet to be officially determined by the university management.
“Yes, he passed away last night. He was in good health and in high spirits at his office on Wednesday. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljanah Firdaus,” she expressed.
A statement from the university announced, “We regret to inform you of the demise of Mr. Ayuba Olaitan Abdullahi from the Bursary Department. The janazah will take place this morning, and he will be laid to rest at the Hausa Muslim cemetery, Apata Yakuba, Oyun area, Ilorin, at 9 am.”
Similarly, former federal lawmaker in Delta State, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, also passed away while watching the Eagles’ match.
A source close to the politician disclosed, “Cairo Ojougboh, a medical doctor, passed away during the Nigeria vs. South Africa match."
