Lagos Police Investigate Death of Newlywed Man in Custody, Arrest Investigating Officer

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of Abdulmujid Igbamitayo Oduga, a newlywed man who died while in police custody at Ikota Police Post in the Ajah area of the state.

Oduga was reportedly arrested on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, following a misunderstanding with his female neighbor. His family alleges that he was subjected to severe torture while detained, which led to his death. They also claim that the police denied him access to contact his family before his passing.

A family member, @omoiyacele, raised the alarm on social media, accusing the police of dumping Oduga’s body at a morgue in the Epe area without notifying the family. The post revealed that Oduga had been married for just four months before the tragic incident.

In response, Lagos State Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed on Wednesday, February 19, that the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) and the complainant have been arrested as part of the inquiry.

“Investigations have since commenced. The Investigating Police Officer and the complainant are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba. Meanwhile, an autopsy is about to be carried out to determine the cause of death, after which further necessary actions will follow,” Hundeyin stated.

He assured the public of a thorough investigation, promising that any person found culpable would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
