Liberian Immigrant Sentenced to Life for Brutal Murder of Pregnant Lover in Australia

Hassan Jabbie, a Liberian immigrant and geo-technician, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his secret lover, Janet Dweh.
Dweh, 36, was just weeks away from giving birth when she was bludgeoned to death in her Dayton home in October 2021. She was struck in the head at least 30 times with a hammer by Jabbie—a married man who didn’t want her to go through with the pregnancy.
Despite denying the crime, Jabbie reportedly confessed to an undercover officer posing as his cellmate, expressing regret over meeting Dweh and admitting that their confrontation turned violent when she refused to get an abortion.

During sentencing, the court heard details of Jabbie’s traumatic past—how he fled Liberia as a child and witnessed his younger brother’s murder, leading to a PTSD diagnosis. However, the judge ruled that his history did not excuse his actions and sentenced him to life in prison.
Jabbie showed no emotion as the verdict was delivered. He must serve at least 24 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Dweh’s loved ones filled the courtroom, expressing relief that justice had been served. Her brother Jeremiah remembered her as “somebody that was loving, a part of the community” and “a fantastic woman who was extremely hardworking.”
