Five students at Teerthanker Mahaveer University in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, were struck by lightning on Thursday, April 10, while seeking shelter from a sudden rainstorm. The frightening moment was captured on CCTV footage, showing the undergraduates huddled beneath a tree when a lightning bolt suddenly struck, sending them crashing to the ground.
One of the students managed to get up and run for help, returning shortly with others who rushed to check on the motionless victims. All five students suffered severe burn injuries and were transported immediately to TMU Hospital for emergency treatment. Two remain in critical condition, while the other three are reported to be recovering. The students have not been publicly identified.
In a statement issued following the incident, the university said its rapid response helped save lives. "On April 10, 2025, a sudden lightning strike on campus affected five students at TMU. In a moment that could have turned tragic, the university administration acted with remarkable speed and care. Within minutes, medical teams rushed to the spot, and all students received immediate treatment at TMU Hospital," the statement read. Officials confirmed that the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) visited the site to oversee the situation and ensure all emergency measures were in place.

Thunderstorms, which can occur year-round, often bring lightning accompanied by thunder, strong winds, and heavy rain. These storms develop when warm, moist air rises and cools, forming thunderclouds. As a result, safety during such conditions is paramount.
Authorities reiterated that taking shelter under trees during lightning storms is extremely hazardous, as lightning often strikes tall, isolated objects. Instead, individuals caught outdoors should find a low-lying open area away from trees, poles, or metal objects and crouch down, minimizing contact with the ground. If inside a tent, staying away from metal poles is advised.
Additional safety measures include unplugging non-essential appliances to avoid power surges, staying away from water, avoiding activities like golfing or boating, and steering clear of metal objects such as bicycles, wheelchairs, fences, and umbrellas. If one feels their hair stand on end—a sign of imminent lightning—they should immediately squat close to the ground, hands on knees, head tucked, and avoid lying flat.
If someone is struck by lightning, it can cause severe burns and impact the heart. Immediate first aid includes checking for a pulse and beginning CPR if necessary.
The tragic incident has raised awareness about the importance of lightning safety, especially during rapidly changing weather conditions.
