Mafia gangster hands priest poisoned chalice
A suspected mafia gangster brazenly attempted to poison a parish priest known for his outspoken stance against organized crime by adding bleach to communion wine.
During Mass in the town of Cessaniti, Calabria – a stronghold of the powerful ’Ndrangheta mafia network – Father Felice Palamara detected an unusual odor emanating from the flasks containing water and wine. He promptly halted the service and alerted the Carabinieri police, who confirmed through tests that the flasks indeed contained bleach.
Authorities are reviewing security footage in hopes of identifying the perpetrator responsible for contaminating the sacramental elements.
This apparent assassination endeavor seems to be a reprisal for Father Felice's vocal opposition to the ’Ndrangheta's presence in the community. The criminal syndicate generates substantial revenue, primarily through cocaine trafficking and various illicit activities.
Father Felice, who suffers from asthma and heart issues, narrowly avoided potential harm from ingesting the bleach. He remains resolute, asserting that the intimidation tactic won't deter the parish's mission for growth and redemption.
This incident follows a pattern of threats against Father Felice, including vandalism to his car and menacing letters. Despite the hostility, he maintains a stance of forgiveness and love toward his aggressors.
Moreover, other clergy and civil society figures in the region have faced similar intimidation tactics, indicative of the mafia's pervasive influence.
The Catholic Church, along with anti-mafia associations, has condemned these attacks and continues to advocate for peace, legality, and the eradication of mafia influence in Calabria.
Experts suggest that targeted priests like Father Felice have become more vocal in challenging mafia dominance and advocating for societal reform. However, the ’Ndrangheta remains deeply entrenched in the region, as evidenced by its extensive criminal activities and far-reaching global network.
