Man Arrested For Beating Girlfriend To Stupor In Delta For Refusing To Abort Pregnancy
The Delta State Police Command has taken into custody a 32-year-old man, Ernest Okemute, following allegations of assaulting his girlfriend in the Orokpor community of Ughelli North Local Government Area.
Kelvin Ejumudo, a Nigerian activist, brought attention to the incident in a Facebook post on April 21, 2024. He claimed that the suspect, Ernest Okemute, physically attacked his girlfriend, Precious Ekarume, who is pregnant with his child. The assault reportedly stemmed from her refusal to abort the pregnancy as demanded by the suspect.
Ejumudo further detailed that Okemute had expressed a lack of concern for the consequences of his actions, even going as far as threatening his girlfriend's life during the assault. The severity of the attack, involving the use of a belt and stick, left Ekarume severely injured.
Fortunately, Ekarume was able to seek help through community leaders, prompting swift action by Ejumudo and law enforcement. With the assistance of the Area Commander of Ughelli Nigeria Police Force Delta State Command, ACP ADEMOLA ADEBAYOR, Okemute was apprehended and is currently in police custody pending further legal proceedings.
Ejumudo emphasized the importance of laws such as the Violence Against Persons Act 2022 in Delta state, which prohibits violence against individuals, particularly women. This case underscores the ongoing need to combat gender-based violence and ensure the safety and well-being of all members of society.
