A man met a tragic end at an Indian zoo after reportedly deliberately entering a lion enclosure, resulting in a fatal mauling, according to zoo officials.
Prahalad Gurjar breached the boundaries of the S.V. Zoological Park's lion enclosure around 2:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, during the public display of a male Asiatic Lion named Dungarpur, as detailed in a news release.
Despite being warned by a zookeeper conducting routine checks, Gurjar, hailing from the Alwar district in Rajasthan, persisted in scaling the enclosure's wall and chain-link fencing, before intentionally leaping inside.
Upon spotting Gurjar within its confines, the lion attacked swiftly. Despite efforts by the zookeeper and nearby security personnel to intervene, Gurjar was tragically dragged further into the enclosure.
Both the Press Trust of India (PTI) and The Times reported that Gurjar's alleged motive was to take a selfie with the lion, with police suggesting he may have been under the influence of alcohol.
"We had already cautioned him against approaching the enclosure," remarked zoo curator C Selvam. "Nevertheless, he defied the warnings and proceeded, leading to this regrettable incident."
Following the attack, zoo authorities promptly notified the M.R.Palli Police station and summoned medical assistance. The lion was secured inside its night shelter while Gurjar's body, along with his belongings, was recovered from the enclosure.
The zoo indicated that Gurjar likely succumbed to severe injuries and excessive bleeding, with the fatal mauling reportedly occurring within a span of 10 minutes.
Footage and images shared by Times reporter Sudhakar Udumula on social media revealed the lion in captivity and the aftermath of the incident, as officials assessed the scene.
Gurjar's family has been informed of the tragedy, and his remains have been transported to the SVRR Government General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
