Man Dies Aboard Fiji Airways Flight to San Francisco
A 41-year-old American man died on a Fiji Airways flight en route to San Francisco on Saturday, despite the crew’s and an onboard doctor’s desperate efforts to save him.
The passenger experienced a medical emergency about an hour and a half before the flight from Nadi, Fiji, was due to land at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), according to a statement from Fiji Airways on Tuesday. Despite the immediate assistance provided, the passenger did not survive.
The flight crew declared a medical emergency and landed safely at SFO at 2:34 p.m. First responders and Fiji Airways ground personnel were on standby to remove the deceased passenger upon arrival. The airline commended the cabin crew and the assisting doctor for their swift and professional response.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” Fiji Airways said. The exact circumstances of the passenger's death remain unclear.
This incident comes a month after a New York mother filed a lawsuit against American Airlines, claiming negligence in the death of her 14-year-old son, Kevin Greenidge, on a flight in 2022. The lawsuit alleges that the defibrillator used on Kevin was faulty and that the crew was slow to respond and inadequately trained. Kevin, who suffered from asthma and type 2 diabetes, died of a myocardial infarction.
