Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping 8-year-old girl

Aniedi Mfon, 25

The Cross River State High Court in Calabar delivered a life imprisonment sentence to a 25-year-old man for raping an 8-year-old girl on Tuesday, May 7th, 2024.

In her ruling, Justice Blessing Egwu condemned the convict, Mr. Aniedi Mfon, stating that he lacked conscience.

Justice Egwu expressed deep concern about the alarming rate of child defilement prevalent in society.

As part of the judgement, she ordered a fine of N1 million to be paid to the survivor, whose identity was not disclosed.

Reports indicate that the prosecution was facilitated by Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Grimah; Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Ededem Ani; Principal Counsel of Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), Barr. James Ibor; and Prosecutor, Patience Emmanuel Akpama.

In response, Barrister James Ibor highlighted that the survivor's father faced intimidation and bribery attempts to withdraw the case, but he stood firm.

“I extend my gratitude to the Commissioner of Police and his team, Attorney General Ededem Ani and his team, the staff of the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, the survivor, and her father, who resisted intimidation and bribes to withdraw,” said Barr. James Ibor.
