A man went on a violent rampage inside a Brooklyn home Sunday morning, slashing four young girls with a meat cleaver before being shot by police officers who responded to a desperate 911 call from one of the victims.
The attack unfolded around 10:15 a.m. on 84th Street, when an 11-year-old girl, bleeding from her injuries, locked herself in a room and called emergency services, reporting that her uncle had attacked her and her siblings.

Responding officers forced their way into the apartment after hearing screams. Inside, they encountered a man near the entrance, armed with a bloodied meat cleaver and standing amidst a blood-smeared floor. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon multiple times. When he refused and advanced toward them, two officers fired a total of seven rounds, striking him and ending the threat.
The four victims—girls aged 16, 13, 11, and 8—suffered serious slash and stab wounds and were transported to Maimonides Medical Center. All are expected to survive.
The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Lun Chang Chen, was also taken to the hospital in critical condition. Authorities believe he lived in the residence where the attack took place.

Police said the motive for the assault remains under investigation. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the incident as a narrowly averted tragedy. “This could have ended very differently,” she said.
A neighbor described the chaos after the attack, recalling seeing two young girls emerge from the building “covered in blood.” “I was shaking. I’m still shaking now,” said the resident, who noted the family had only recently moved into the area.
Another neighbor, Humbert Huerta, reported seeing the suspect being wheeled out on a stretcher, shirtless and bloody. “They shot him twice. They took him out and put him in the ambulance. Probably 40 years old,” he said.

Authorities also confirmed a fifth child, a boy, had been in the apartment earlier and managed to escape the initial violence to seek help. Commissioner Tisch stated, “Right now we know there were five children, four hurt. This might be the father of some of them or the uncle. And, again, we’re going to work through that. And we believe the mother was out of the house.”
State Assemblyman Lester Chang, who represents the neighborhood, said one of the victims may have been a babysitter. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
