Mike Tyson, 57, suffers medical scare during flight to Los Angeles - just two months before fight with 27-year-old Jake Paul
Mike Tyson experienced a medical emergency during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on Sunday, as confirmed by his representatives. The 57-year-old former heavyweight champion became nauseous and dizzy, prompting flight staff to request medical assistance from passengers.
Upon landing in Los Angeles, paramedics boarded the plane to treat Tyson. The flight had already been delayed by two hours in Miami due to the heat.
Tyson’s representatives stated, “Thankfully, Mr. Tyson is doing great. He became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing. He is appreciative of the medical staff that were there to help him.”
Common symptoms of an ulcer flare-up include nausea, vomiting, bloating, belching, gas pain, chest pain, and fatigue.
Reports from In Touch revealed that Tyson's condition was addressed by an onboard announcement asking for a doctor 30 minutes before landing. An eyewitness in the exit row near Tyson recalled, “They asked us to stay on the plane after landing so paramedics could enter. The stewardess mentioned, ‘He's a really important passenger, so we want to make sure he's OK.’ I mouthed ‘Mike Tyson’ to her, and she nodded yes.”
After landing at LAX, paramedics treated Tyson for about 25 minutes before he was cleared.
This incident comes just two months before Tyson is scheduled to fight YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Dallas. Tyson, who typically uses marijuana daily, has stopped using the drug and abstained from sex temporarily as part of his training regimen, following the rules set by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Tyson’s publicist, Joann Mignano, mentioned, “He only stopped as a means of following all the rules, but he remains a strong advocate for the medicinal benefits of cannabis for his personal well-being and others like him.”
The upcoming fight, scheduled for July 20 at AT&T Stadium, has faced criticism due to the significant age gap between Tyson and Paul. In response to critics, Tyson remarked, “I don't see too many people critical about it. Who? Name me somebody.”
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has sanctioned the fight as a professional bout, consisting of eight two-minute rounds instead of the usual 10 or 12 three-minute rounds. Additionally, the fighters will use heavier gloves (14 ounces instead of 10), which is expected to reduce the power of punches.
Tyson, who retired in 2005, most recently fought in an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020. Reflecting on the upcoming event, Tyson said, “I was doing this years ago, so this is nothing new to me. This is new to this young boy over here.”
Tyson will turn 58 on July 20, the day of the fight against Jake Paul at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium.
