Mixed martial arts fighter Langston Sykes was fatally shot while breaking into a home in Lake City, Florida. The 31-year-old was shot just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday after forcing entry into the residence.

According to law enforcement officials, Sykes was known to the occupants of the home, one of whom had previously obtained an injunction against him. Authorities determined that the resident acted in self-defense under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, and no charges have been filed.

Investigators reported that Sykes successfully broke into the property and charged at one of the occupants, who then fired the fatal shots. First responders arrived at the scene, but Sykes succumbed to his injuries.

Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler stated, “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with everyone affected. Based on the investigation, it appears this may be a case of a resident acting in self-defense during a home invasion.”

Sykes, who was also a father of five, competed professionally in mixed martial arts under the name Langston "Blaze" Sykes. His MMA record, according to Tapology, included one win, four losses, and zero draws.

Following the incident, several figures in the MMA community shared tributes to Sykes. His coach, James Smiley, described him as a “fierce competitor, a great father, and a loyal friend.”

“Langston was more than just a part of our team; he was family. His kindness, laughter, and unwavering support for those he loved will never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to his family, especially his five children, who were his greatest pride and joy,” Smiley wrote.

Ring announcer Christopher J. Rothstein also expressed his grief, stating, “He was a fighter, a friend to so many, and he loved being a father. God bless his family during this tragic time.”

Fellow MMA fighter Ramon Taveras reflected on Sykes’ passing, saying, “This man was talented and it’s sad to see him gone so early. He had so much more life to give.”

Trainer Glen Cannon added, “Lanko was like a brother to me. At times, we would disagree and butt heads, but it was always with love. I’m at a loss for words.”

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
