Mom of author accused of poisoning husband also had partner who died of overdose
The newly released court affidavit indicates the possible involvement of Lisa Darden, the mother of Utah grief author Kouri Richins, in the death of Kouri's husband, Eric Richins, who was allegedly poisoned.
Summit County Sheriff's investigators stated in the affidavit that there is a possibility Lisa Darden was "involved in planning and orchestrating" Eric Richins' death. This suspicion arose due to several factors, including Darden's proximity to her partner's suspicious overdose death in 2006, which was determined to be caused by oxycodone overdose.
The investigator noted that the circumstances of the partner's death, combined with Darden becoming the recipient of the partner's estate shortly before her death, suggest a possible involvement.
Additionally, conversations found on Kouri Richins' phone showed disdain from Lisa Darden towards Eric Richins, according to the affidavit.
No charges have been filed against Lisa Darden at this time.
Eric Richins was found unresponsive after celebrating a real estate transaction with his wife and her mother. Investigators determined his cause of death as fentanyl poisoning, with a lethal dosage of fentanyl found in his system. The fentanyl was identified as illicit rather than pharmaceutical grade.
Kouri Richins, who wrote a grief-themed children's book a year after her husband's death and was subsequently arrested, denies accusations of stealing funds from Eric Richins' account, a claim made by prosecutors. Her family asserts that she never stole from her husband.
