Brazilian boy, 16, disarms and shoots bank's security guard, 47, in the neck before hiding behind his mother

Surveillance camera footage depicted the 16-year-old boy walking with his mother when he abruptly took Samuel da Silva's weapon out of his holster at Banco do Brasil in Bauru, São Paulo.


The teen, whose name is withheld because he is a minor, pointed the gun at the 47-year-old Banco do Brasil guard and shot him in the neck.

Da Silva could be observed collapsing to the ground while the mother confronted the teenager, who placed the gun on the floor. The boy then hid behind his mother as two guards aimed their guns at him.

One of the guards fired a shot but missed, not hitting the teen.


The boy was arrested on the scene and taken to the local Bauru Civil Police station, where he was questioned but couldn't explain why he attacked the guard.


The 16-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, was seen on camera hiding behind his mother moments after he disarmed a security guard at a bank in Bauru, a city in the southern Brazilian state of São Paulo

São Paulo Military Police first lieutenant Luiz de Souza stated that investigators are still looking into what could have motivated the teen and revealed that the boy reportedly has a mental illness. "The mother said she believed he had a psychiatric problem, without diagnosis or specialized monitoring, and had an episode. But that is still not clear," de Souza said, according to Brazilian outlets.


Da Silva had a bullet lodged in his neck and was swiftly taken to an area hospital.

The Bauru Health Department mentioned in a statement that da Silva was going to have a CT scan and that he was in stable condition.


Banco do Brasil also mentioned in a statement that it is providing support and medical care to da Silva, who was hired through a security company.
