Mountaineer plunges 1,000ft to her death in front of horrified friends after slipping during climb in Italy
A mountaineer tragically fell to her death after slipping into a rocky ravine while hiking with friends. Monica Reginato, 55, from Castelfranco, plummeted 984ft from the Sorapiss mountain in the Dolomites, northern Italy, on Saturday, April 20.
Despite having crampons and other safety gear, Reginato's fall was fatal. Emergency services responded to the incident at around 3:30 pm but could only confirm her immediate passing.
A skilled mountaineer who had taught at a mountaineering school for two decades, Reginato had fallen into a deep gully, necessitating a challenging retrieval by rescue teams.
The mountaineering school paid tribute to Reginato, acknowledging her years of dedication, teaching, and inspiration to fellow climbers. Her funeral is scheduled to take place on Wednesday afternoon in Castelfranco Veneto.
This incident follows other recent mountaineering tragedies, including an experienced climber's fatal fall into Mount St. Helens' crater and a fitness influencer's death while exploring an abandoned village in Italy.
