N10bn fraud: EFCC to arraign ex-Kwara gov Friday

Former Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign the immediate-past governor of Kwara State, Abdulfattah Ahmed, for alleged involvement in a N10 billion fraud case, as per sources familiar with the matter. The ex-governor is expected to appear before the Federal High Court in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

According to credible sources within the anti-graft agency, Ahmed faces charges related to the diversion of funds totaling N10 billion. He has been in EFCC custody since Monday, following his compliance with an invitation for questioning.

Confirming Ahmed's visit to the EFCC office, his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji AbdulWahab Oba, described it as routine and procedural, asserting Ahmed's willingness to cooperate with any inquiries regarding his tenure.

However, Oba expressed concerns over Ahmed's continued detention, citing shifting bail conditions imposed by the EFCC. Initially, the agency requested two federal directors as sureties, later demanding landed properties in Abuja, which Oba deemed contradictory.

Meanwhile, members of the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State staged a peaceful protest at the EFCC zonal office in Ilorin, condemning Ahmed's detention and alleging political motives behind the EFCC's actions.

Addressing the protesters, EFCC Zonal Commander Michael Nzekwe stated that Ahmed had been granted administrative bail, which he had not been able to meet. Nzekwe assured that the agency was operating within the confines of the law and emphasized its non-partisan stance, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the rule of law.
