NC student charged with assault after allegedly slapping teacher in viral video

The assault caught on video took place at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on April 15, 2024.

A North Carolina high school student has been charged with assault following an incident where they were captured on camera slapping a teacher during a profanity-laden exchange.

The incident involving the unidentified juvenile took place at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem on April 15, as reported by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) on Facebook. Video footage circulated online shows the student confronting a seated teacher before striking her in the face.

Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill spoke at a press conference last week about the assault at the school.

In the video, the teacher can be heard asking, "Do you think that affected me in any way?" The student responds by stepping up and repeating the question while delivering another blow to the teacher, causing her glasses to fly off her face.

Following the incident, the school's principal, Noel Keener, informed parents that the student would face disciplinary measures alongside criminal charges for their "inappropriate and unsettling" conduct, as reported by local TV station WGHP.

Superintendent Tricia McManus expressed her concern, stating that such behavior would not be tolerated. She emphasized the importance of ensuring the affected teacher receives necessary support to navigate through the aftermath of the incident.

The student is facing charges including communicating threats and misdemeanor assault, with the sheriff's office withholding further details due to the individual's status as a juvenile.

Former teachers at the school commented on the incident, noting that behavioral issues escalated upon students' return to in-person learning post-COVID-19 closures. The sheriff's office echoed sentiments of concern, emphasizing the need for support and healing for both the teacher and students who witnessed the assault.
