A quiet cul-de-sac in New Jersey witnessed a devastating explosion Thursday evening, resulting in one man's death, injuring another, and prompting the evacuation of the neighborhood, officials confirmed.

Startling images depict the Middlesex County home reduced to rubble, with debris strewn across the street and neighboring yards, while a small fire sent smoke into the sky.

The explosion occurred just after 7 p.m. at a residence on Continental Court in South River, according to police reports.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered two men with severe injuries, as stated by the police. Kevin Gilbert, aged 62, succumbed to his injuries at the scene shortly after emergency personnel arrived, while the other man was swiftly transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

First responders arrived and found two men with serious injuries, cops said.

The impact of the blast also caused damage to nearby houses.

Authorities advised the public to steer clear of the areas around Continental Court, Heritage Drive, and the lower end of Leonardine Avenue in a public alert issued by South River police.

The police emphasized that there is no immediate threat to the public and are ensuring the area remains accessible for emergency vehicles and crews.

Footage from a CBS News chopper revealed the extensive damage, with remnants of the house scattered in all directions and a fallen basketball hoop among the wreckage.

Efforts are underway to clear debris to access the gas lines, with all gas lines in the neighborhood being shut down as a precautionary measure, according to the news station.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion.
