New Jersey Teen Fatally Struck by Train on His Way to Soccer Scrimmage

Matthew Dickinson, a 15-year-old student-athlete from Palmyra, New Jersey, was tragically killed on Thursday morning after being struck by a River Line train in Burlington County. The incident occurred as Matthew was walking near the tracks on his way to a soccer scrimmage.

Authorities have not yet provided details surrounding the circumstances of the accident, and New Jersey Transit police are continuing their investigation. The northbound train involved in the crash had 29 passengers on board at the time, though no other injuries were reported.

Matthew, who was about to begin his sophomore year at Palmyra High School, was remembered fondly by his community at a vigil held on Sunday night. Mike Papenberg, the athletic director and boys' soccer coach at the school, praised Matthew's dedication, hard work, and unselfish nature. "He always had a smile on his face and would do anything for anyone. He will never be forgotten," Papenberg said.

Interim Superintendent Mark Pease echoed these sentiments, describing Matthew as an academically strong student who was well-liked by his peers. "He had an energy that people were drawn to," Pease added.

In the wake of the tragedy, Palmyra Mayor Gina Tait indicated that discussions with New Jersey Transit would take place to improve safety in the area, which has become a popular crossing spot for teenagers. "When school is in session, we have a crossing guard over the tracks. However, there's an area with an opening in the gate that we need to address," she said.
