Newport Beach carnage as homeowner in $5million mansion shoots intruder who broke in with an accomplice at 4am while his family was sleeping
A shootout between a courageous homeowner in Newport Beach and two intruders resulted in one suspect's death and another's severe injury.
The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning when the two men invaded the homeowner's $5 million, 4,709 square-foot property while his family slept. Responding to the threat, the homeowner fired shots, prompting a 911 call at 4:45 am. Police arrived at the gated community off Newport Coast Drive and Pelican Hill Road, finding one suspect dead and another, armed and injured, in the middle of the street.
The deceased intruder was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head after fleeing the house, according to police statements. Investigators believe the invasion was targeted, although the exact relationship between the suspects and homeowners remains unclear.
The wounded suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital, and his condition remains unknown. Meanwhile, his accomplice was discovered deceased in nearby bushes.
Thankfully, the four individuals inside the home were safely evacuated and uninjured. Police, armed and cautious, approached the massive home and entered through the front doors with a police dog.
While the motive for the invasion is unclear, authorities have ruled out the possibility of a random attack. Sgt. Steve Oberon emphasized that the incident is isolated and assured the Newport Beach community of its safety.
Former owners Belle Tatsing and Sally Tatsing expressed shock at seeing their old home in the news, stating that such incidents are uncommon in the secure and affluent community. Belle noted that the invasion was not random, echoing police statements.
The home, which was recently sold in January 2024 for over $5 million, boasts six bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, a three-car garage, pool, patio, walk-in closet, and breathtaking views.
