The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has revealed that Nigeria stands to save over N94 billion by eliminating palm oil imports, provided strict measures and processes are implemented. Adherence to quality standards would not only contribute to savings but also boost foreign earnings in the non-oil sector.

Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director-General and Chief Executive of SON, highlighted the agency's efforts towards enhancing Nigeria's export trade. A recent public sensitisation workshop held in Osogbo, Osun State, targeted palm oil operators and stakeholders.

During the workshop, Prof. Kehinde Owolarafe from Obafemi Awolowo University discussed the potential savings and challenges in Nigeria's palm oil sector. He noted the significant decline in Nigeria's palm oil production compared to Indonesia and Malaysia, attributing it to factors such as aging oil palm plantations, inadequate processing technologies, and unfavorable government policies.

Owolarafe emphasized the urgent need for improved production quality and quantity to meet international standards and facilitate exports. He also cautioned against palm oil adulteration, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to enhance industry standards and competitiveness.

The Osogbo event aimed to raise awareness and promote standards compliance among all stakeholders in the palm oil value chain. This initiative is crucial for enhancing production efficiency, increasing income, and aligning with Nigerian Industrial Standards and global best practices.
