A man who fatally stabbed his stepfather in a violent and psychotic episode after returning from a drug-fueled trip to Ibiza has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

Adejuwon Oyekan, 32, killed Jason Thompson at the family home in Hayes, Middlesex, on July 11, 2023—just two days after coming back from a business trip to the Spanish island. Oyekan, who was co-owner of a social media management company, had gone to Ibiza with a close friend and business partner, Max Webber, to meet clients. During the trip, he consumed a cocktail of drugs including cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine, and MDMA during a four-to-five-day binge, which triggered a psychotic episode.

Upon returning to the UK, Oyekan gave away several high-value possessions—including a £20,000 Rolex watch and Louis Vuitton luggage—to strangers. His family became alarmed by his erratic behavior and attempted to seek medical help, but were unsuccessful. Early on July 11, Oyekan’s sister contacted police, reporting that he had “lost his mind.”

When officers arrived at the home, they found Oyekan in a bedroom, kneeling over Mr. Thompson with a large kitchen knife. He appeared emotionless, with a wide-eyed stare. Despite being tasered, he continued to stab his stepfather, inflicting fatal wounds to the neck and chest. He was only subdued after firearms officers arrived.

Jason Thompson died at the scene after the initial officers retreated to wait for armed support. Oyekan was arrested and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey on February 24. He had no prior history of mental illness but was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia after the attack.

The court heard that Oyekan was clearly psychotic during the incident. Prosecutor Louise Oakley said he shouted bizarre demands at police, asking for a “remote island” for his family and a “cyber secure” environment. One officer described his demeanor as “inhuman” and “evil.”

In sentencing, Judge Alexia Durran KC imposed a hospital order with restrictions, acknowledging that Oyekan's psychosis had overwhelmed him. The judge noted that he had no prior history of violence and had enjoyed a close and loving relationship with Mr. Thompson, whom he considered a father figure. She said he appeared to be working hard to manage his mental health while in hospital and would likely require lifelong treatment.

The court also heard about Oyekan’s prior convictions for drug-related offenses, including possession with intent to supply psychoactive substances, cocaine, ketamine, and MDMA.

Members of Mr. Thompson’s family spoke of their devastation. Veronica Thompson, the victim’s mother, described July 11, 2023, as the worst day of her life, remembering her son as a kind and considerate man and a passionate West Ham fan. Another relative, Kariba Rhooms, addressed Oyekan directly, urging him to accept his mental illness and avoid drugs.

In mitigation, defense counsel Kevin Metzger said the family had tried to obtain medical help for Oyekan prior to the killing and that the tragedy might have been prevented had he been seen by a professional just a day earlier. He read a heartfelt letter from Oyekan, expressing deep remorse. “He is deeply and profoundly sorry to the very core of his being,” Metzger said.

The judge acknowledged the tragedy for all involved, stating: “On that disastrous day, you lost so much more than your liberty.”
