North Carolina Man Kills Estranged Wife and Himself After Disappearance, Police Say
A North Carolina man who vanished with his estranged wife is accused of killing her and then himself. Police discovered their bodies in the woods with gunshot wounds on Friday.
The tragic discovery followed the issuance of an Ashanti Alert for Cynthia Gobble, 60, on Thursday. Her 59-year-old husband, Greg Gobble, was identified as a suspect in her disappearance.
The Davie County Sheriff’s Office had been searching for the couple and eventually located both bodies in a wooded area in Iredell County. Officials stated that the Gobbles were undergoing a divorce at the time, and evidence suggested Greg killed his wife before turning the gun on himself, WFMY News reported.
Police conducted a welfare check at Cynthia’s Mocksville home around 10 p.m. on Thursday, finding her purse, wallet, and insulin left behind. Evidence indicated that Cynthia was forcibly taken from her home.
Greg was labeled a person of interest in the disappearance, but neither he nor his white food truck could be located. The Ashanti Alert—similar to an Amber Alert but for adults—noted evidence of “physical endangerment, abduction or kidnapping.”
On Friday, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the discovery of Greg’s food truck in a wooded area off Sheffield Road, with two bodies found nearby. Investigators identified the bodies as Cynthia and Greg, and the murder weapon was found close to the scene.
"Iredell County and Davie County detectives are currently processing the scene," the local sheriff’s office said in a statement. "We do not suspect that any other persons were involved in this incident and there is no continuing danger to members of the public."
