NYC start-up founder Sophia D’Antoine, 30, dies after being mowed down crossing UES street
A tragic incident unfolded when Sophia D’Antoine, 30, was struck by a Land Rover driver while crossing the street near her home, leading to her untimely death, as confirmed by Patch.
The accident occurred on April 2 at around 9:30 p.m. as D’Antoine was crossing York Avenue at East 87th Street. The 72-year-old driver of a 2017 Land Rover, traveling north on York Avenue, collided with her in the crosswalk, according to the final report from the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad.
Following the initial collision, the Land Rover veered, hitting a yellow 2011 Kia Niro cab in the opposite lane and subsequently causing it to crash into a parked 2022 Ford Explorer. D’Antoine was critically injured and was rushed to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she fought for nearly a week before succumbing to her injuries.
The yellow cab driver sustained injuries to his neck and back and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment.
Although the Land Rover driver remained at the scene, no charges or summonses were issued. The investigation by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing, with no arrests made as of Monday.
Records indicate that the Land Rover had accumulated five school zone speed camera violations since April 2022, primarily in Queens.
The final collision report did not clarify the status of the traffic lights during the accident, and further details regarding the traffic light conditions at the time were not provided by authorities.
This tragedy occurred amid a series of vehicular incidents in the area, including an 84-year-old man being hit by an SUV the day before and another incident involving a man being struck by a car while attempting to break up a fight.
The Upper East Side has experienced a total of 470 vehicle crashes in the past year, resulting in three deaths and 570 injuries, according to Crashmapper NYC data. In light of these events, safety concerns and precautions remain a focal point in the community.
