NYC subway slasher apprehended after alleged assault on 11-year-old girl
A disturbed individual, reportedly armed with a box cutter, stands accused of slashing an 11-year-old girl in the head during a violent incident near a New York City subway station.
Shaquan Cummings, 30, was arrested by the NYPD on Friday afternoon and faces charges including assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. The assault occurred around 2:18 p.m. outside the 116th Street 6 subway station.
Cummings allegedly first punched a 43-year-old woman before targeting the young girl, inflicting cuts to the back of her head and her ear as she walked hand-in-hand with her mother. Gorzata Sladek, the girl's mother, described the incident as traumatizing and expressed concern about her daughter's emotional well-being.
The victim was promptly taken to NYC Health and Hospital/Harlem in stable condition, undergoing surgery and receiving multiple stitches to close the wound. However, Sladek shared that her daughter is struggling emotionally, feeling apprehensive about returning to school or going outdoors.
Video footage captured the aftermath of the assault, showing the girl being loaded into an EMS vehicle, her clothes stained with blood. Meanwhile, Cummings fled the scene but was later apprehended about a block away, where he had reportedly assaulted another woman before attacking the girl.
Cummings, who has a significant criminal history with over 20 prior arrests, was surrounded by an angry crowd upon his arrest, with witnesses expressing outrage over the heinous act. Sladek emphasized the need for justice, highlighting the senselessness of attacking a defenseless child while calling for accountability.
