Ogun State: police hunt killers of commercial motorcyclist
The Ogun State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for two farm laborers, identified only as Danjuma and Victor, in connection with the alleged murder of a commercial motorcyclist named Shola Olarewaju.
According to reports, the incident occurred on January 28 at Alago Meji Street, Isara-Remo, Ogun State. Police authorities suspect that the perpetrators strangled Olarewaju and subsequently absconded with his motorcycle.
Omolola Odutola, the State Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that after perpetrating the crime, the suspects attempted to flee the area with Olarewaju's motorcycle but were intercepted by a member of the local vigilante group.
Sekinah Awosanya, a farmer who brought the suspects from Osun State to work on her farm, recounted to the police that Danjuma and Victor, both of northern origin, had been residing in their second house at Itakete in Isara alongside Olarewaju, who operated as a commercial motorcyclist.
Odutola disclosed, "At about 11:53 pm, a member of the local vigilante stopped them (Danjuma and Victor) while they were fleeing the town on Olarewaju's motorcycle. When questioned about their destination, they claimed they were heading to their employer's residence, Awosanya's house."
"However, upon arriving at the location, as the security personnel was about to dismount from his motorcycle, both Victor and Danjuma abandoned Olarewaju's motorcycle and absconded," Odutola continued.
Efforts to locate the suspects proved futile initially. However, Awosanya later led security personnel to the suspects' residence, where Olarewaju's lifeless body was discovered. He was found with his hands and legs bound behind him, indicating possible strangulation by the suspects.
Odutola confirmed that Awosanya, the woman who facilitated the suspects' stay in the community, had been detained to aid in the preliminary investigation. The victim's body was deposited at the Isara General Hospital Morgue for autopsy, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department upon completion of the initial investigation.
Although the motive behind the murder remains unclear, attacks on commercial motorcyclists in Remo communities have been recurrent. In a similar incident in 2023, operatives of the Amotekun Corps in Ogun State rescued another commercial motorcyclist, Mohammed Bashiru, from a suspected robber in Ode-Remo.
