Ohio police release body camera video of officer shooting 15-year-old boy who had toy gun
Police in Akron, Ohio, released video footage showing an officer shooting 15-year-old Tavion Koonce-Williams, who was reportedly holding a toy gun according to his family, resulting in his injury on April 1 in Akron, Ohio.
Officer Ryan Westlake, a nine-year veteran of the department, fired the shot while responding to a call about a person pointing a gun at houses. The incident has sparked controversy due to Westlake's history of disciplinary actions and use of force incidents.
In the video, Westlake is seen approaching Tavion and asking him to show his hands. As Tavion complies, a shot is fired, injuring him in the wrist. The officer then orders Tavion to the ground, and the teen, visibly distressed, pleads that the gun is fake. Westlake calls for medical assistance and tends to Tavion's injury.
Westlake's file, released by the city, reveals a troubling history, including suspensions for multiple incidents such as using profanity, making anti-gay slurs, and brandishing his firearm while intoxicated. He was previously terminated but later reinstated after an agreement between the city, the police union, and Westlake.
The Fraternal Order of Police, Akron Lodge 7, defended Westlake's actions, stating that he acted within policy and training and provided immediate medical aid to Tavion after the shooting.
Tavion's family and their attorney, Imokhai Okolo, have demanded justice and accountability, emphasizing that Tavion followed all commands but was still shot. They are seeking answers and plan to hold a press conference to address the issue.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent inquiry into the incident, with findings to be reviewed by the Ohio Attorney General's Office and presented to a Summit County Grand Jury.
Additionally, the Akron Police Department's Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will conduct an internal investigation.
