OJ Simpson cremated in secret funeral as decision made on public memorial
The funeral of former NFL star O.J. Simpson took place in downtown Las Vegas in a private service, with his attorney confirming that he was cremated. The ex-running back, who gained international attention after being acquitted of double murder charges in 1995 for the killings of his wife and her friend, passed away on April 10.
Simpson's legal representative, Malcolm LaVergne, verified to the Associated Press that he attended the morning event on April 17 at Palm Mortuary, Las Vegas, but declined to comment on the turnout or details of the service. Simpson had been battling prostate cancer, which was diagnosed last year.
LaVergne stated that there would not be a public memorial for Simpson, and no plans have been made by his family regarding this matter. He confirmed Simpson's cremation, mentioning that others were present at the service but did not disclose their identities.
Earlier, the attorney had shared his last interactions with Simpson, describing him as "awake, alert, and relaxed," watching television and enjoying a beer while staying updated on current events. This encounter occurred before Easter at Simpson's residence in Las Vegas.
Expressing sympathy for Simpson's children, LaVergne acknowledged the unique challenges they face due to their father's global fame, controversial image, and the constant public scrutiny they've endured throughout their lives.
LaVergne is now overseeing Simpson's estate matters in the Nevada State Court. Simpson's surviving children, Arnelle Simpson, Jason Simpson, Sydney Simpson, and Justin Simpson, have received their father's remains and will decide what to do with them based on his wishes.
Simpson, known for his successful NFL career and later involvement in acting, faced significant legal and public scrutiny following the murder trial of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman. Although acquitted of murder, he was held liable in a civil suit and later convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping, serving a lengthy prison sentence.
