Passenger Dies After Falling Overboard on MSC Cruise Ship in Norway's Deepest Fjord
A passenger in his late 50s died Thursday after falling overboard from the MSC Euribia while it sailed through Norway’s deepest fjord, Sognefjord. This marks the second incident of someone falling from the same vessel in less than three months.
The tragic event occurred around 2 a.m. Norwegian time, according to the local newspaper Bergens Tidende. Rescue teams recovered the man's body from the 4,300-foot-deep waters about an hour later. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Authorities have yet to determine the circumstances surrounding the fall, but a police officer stated that the incident is being treated as a “suspicious death,” considering it could be an accident, a criminal act, or an intentional act. The man was reportedly traveling with his wife.
MSC Cruises has not yet commented on the incident.
Following the tragedy, the 19-story cruise ship briefly turned around in the narrow channel but continued its seven-day journey. The ship is scheduled to return to Kiel on Saturday, June 8.
This incident is the seventh case of a person going overboard on an MSC cruise ship in under seven months. In March, Liam Brody Wilkie Jones disappeared from the same MSC Euribia during a European cruise. Additionally, in February, a passenger survived a fall from the MSC Bellissima while traveling from Taiwan to Okinawa.
The MSC Euribia, a massive ship standing 213 feet tall, can accommodate more than 8,000 people. Tickets for the Norway cruise, where the man fatally plunged, cost approximately $700 per person, according to MSC’s website.
