Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola resigned from his post on Tuesday amidst corruption allegations, dealing a blow to President Dina Boluarte who loses a significant political ally.

Panorama TV aired a report over the weekend claiming that Otarola had engaged in a romantic relationship with a woman who allegedly secured a government job. The program also played an audio recording purportedly between the two individuals. Otarola, however, refuted the allegations made by Panorama, stating on his official X account that he has not engaged in any illegal activities. He admitted to being aware of the recording for several months.

"I have not misappropriated any funds from the public," he asserted. "There have been no irregular contracts during my tenure."

The role of prime minister holds significant power in Peruvian politics, as it involves leading the president’s cabinet and serving as a liaison with Congress. Otarola, a former defense minister who has previously served under a different president, played a prominent role as a key spokesperson and representative of the government in the administration of President Boluarte, who lacks political experience.

Otarola's resignation comes shortly after Boluarte replaced her ministers of finance and energy and mines last month. This turnover occurs at a critical juncture for the government, as it endeavors to recover from a recession triggered by adverse weather conditions and political upheaval.
