Pickup truck driver charged with attempted murder in road rage-fueled NYC stabbing
A pickup truck driver in New York City was accused of attempted murder in a road rage incident that took place on Tuesday night, according to authorities.
Antal Lakatos, 28, was driving a Mercedes sedan when he deliberately collided with 38-year-old Shaker Ahmad’s pickup truck on the Queensboro Bridge around 6:50 p.m., as reported by the police.
Once the vehicles stopped, Lakatos got out of his car and opened his trunk. At that moment, Ahmad quickly drove away, according to police sources. However, Lakatos pursued him and caught up at East 62nd Street and Lexington Avenue, where he rear-ended Ahmad's pickup, causing it to hit a light pole, as stated by cops and sources.
Patrol officers from the 19th Precinct were having a meal at a Smashburger restaurant nearby when they heard the crash and rushed to the scene, according to sources.
They witnessed Ahmad leaving his truck and running towards Lakatos's Mercedes. Ahmad allegedly stabbed Lakatos multiple times while he was seated in the driver’s seat, according to the sources. Lakatos was injured and fell out of his car. Officers then provided assistance to Lakatos while another officer handcuffed Ahmad, the sources added.
Ahmad was charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, as confirmed by the police.
Lakatos was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center and was reported to be in stable condition. He was charged with attempted assault, according to the police.
State Corrections records indicate that Ahmad served 18 months in prison between February 2016 and August 2018 due to a conviction for second-degree assault.
Lakatos had been arrested in June 2019 for driving with a suspended license and approximately two months ago for grand larceny auto in Queens, as per police statements.
