Police arrest 8 over murder officers in Delta
The Nigeria Police Force announced that it had arrested eight suspects in connection with the murder of its officers on a fact-finding mission in the Ughelli area of Delta.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made this statement in Abuja on Saturday.
He explained that the officers, who were on a fact-finding mission, were ambushed on Feb. 23, resulting in the death of six police officers. Additionally, others on a rescue mission were also ambushed.
Adejobi mentioned that the arrests were made following intensive investigative efforts by police operatives.
Initially, five suspects were arrested shortly after the incident, and three more were apprehended at different locations.
The arrest of the additional three suspects was facilitated by the statements and cooperation of the initial five suspects. Currently, all suspects are in police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all those responsible for the murder and similar crimes are swiftly and decisively arrested and brought to justice.
The police spokesman stated that once investigations are concluded, the suspects would face court proceedings with credible evidence.
Adejobi expressed deep sadness over the heinous act of violence against police officers who were diligently performing their duty to protect and serve the community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers during this difficult time. We wish to reiterate that the killers of our officers in this case and others have murdered peace, and none of them will go unpunished,” he concluded.
The officers, stationed in Ughelli, were killed on Feb. 23 and 26, with six others reported missing.
