Pope Francis remains in critical condition as blood tests now show early signs of kidney failure, the Vatican announced in a Sunday update. The 88-year-old pontiff continues to battle double pneumonia and a complex lung infection, though he remains alert and responsive.

The Vatican confirmed that Francis has not suffered another respiratory crisis since Saturday night, but he is still receiving high-flow oxygen therapy. Doctors also noted a "mild, initial" failure in his kidneys, though they assured it is currently under control.

His low platelet count, first detected on Saturday, has stabilized following a blood transfusion, and his hemoglobin levels have improved.

Francis has been in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14, with doctors closely monitoring his condition. Due to a history of lung infections—including a partial lung removal in his youth—he remains at high risk for complications.

The Vatican described his pneumonia as “complex”, with multiple microorganisms causing the infection.

With Francis’ condition still uncertain, speculation has grown over his potential resignation or what would happen if he became incapacitated. However, the Vatican emphasized that he remains mentally sharp and engaged, even attending a private Mass from his hospital room.

In St. Peter’s Basilica, Archbishop Rino Fisichella led Sunday’s Mass in place of Francis, offering prayers for his recovery. A pre-written message from the Pope, which he was unable to deliver, emphasized the need for rest as part of his therapy.

Meanwhile, global prayers continue for the Pope—from Argentina to Cairo to schoolchildren in Rome—as the world watches his condition closely.
