Pregnant teen found dead in a ditch days before she was to be induced
A pregnant 17-year-old from South Carolina, Maylashia Shantebia Hogg, was tragically discovered deceased on Sunday, prompting investigators to launch an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Hogg, who was nine months pregnant, had been reported missing from Barnwell, South Carolina, located approximately 42 miles northwest of Hampton. Authorities located her body in a ditch on Sunday, as reported by television station WRDW. The Barnwell County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity.
The Barnwell Police Department said that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Special Victims Unit is leading the investigation and referred inquiries to SLED for further information.
According to SLED spokesperson Renée Wunderlich, "SLED’s investigation is active and ongoing."
Despite requests for additional details, SLED did not provide further information regarding the case. However, several news outlets have reported that the teenager's labor was scheduled to be induced on Feb. 13, just one day before she was reported missing.
Judy Hogg, the aunt of the deceased teenager, expressed her grief and disbelief, emphasizing that her niece was eagerly anticipating motherhood. Describing Maylashia as a student at Barnwell High School with aspirations to become a nurse, Judy Hogg lamented the incomprehensibility of someone causing harm to her niece.
In a poignant message, Judy Hogg urged parents to cherish every moment with their children, reflecting on the uncertainty of life's twists and turns. She underscored the diligent efforts of law enforcement in the search for her niece, acknowledging their constant communication and assistance throughout the ordeal.
Despite the heartache of losing her niece, Judy Hogg finds solace in memories of her late sister, Maylashia's mother, who passed away three years prior. She revealed that Maylashia had planned to honor her mother by naming her baby after her, further highlighting the deep emotional bond within the family.
