Princess Anne sustains minor injuries and a concussion in an ‘incident,’ Buckingham Palace says
Princess Anne sustained head injuries and a concussion following an incident at the Gatcombe Park estate on Sunday night, according to Buckingham Palace. The Princess Royal, 73, was injured by a horse during a stroll on the grounds of the royal residence.
"Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation and is expected to make a full and swift recovery," the palace stated on Monday. King Charles has been informed and "joins the whole Royal Family in sending his fondest love and well-wishes to The Princess for a speedy recovery," the statement added.
The Princess suffered minor wounds to the head, consistent with impact from a horse’s head or legs. Emergency services treated her on the scene before transporting her to Southmead Hospital, where she has undergone tests and treatment.
Princess Anne’s husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, and her children, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, were present on the estate during the incident. Other senior members of the royal family were notified last night.
Anne, the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, is expected to be discharged later this week. Her engagements, including a State Visit and an official trip to Canada, have been canceled.
"On doctors’ advice, Her Royal Highness’s engagements for the week ahead will be postponed. Her Royal Highness sends her apologies to any who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result," her spokesperson said.
The Princess, an experienced rider who competed in the 1976 Olympics, recently rode on horseback during the King’s Trooping the Colour ceremony earlier this month.
