Prosecutors search Peruvian president’s home in graft inquiry
Peruvian prosecutors conducted a raid at President Dina Boluarte's residence late on Friday as part of investigations into potential illicit enrichment and allegations of undeclared ownership of luxury watches.
Television footage showed police forcibly entering the home, reportedly after repeated attempts to gain entry were met with no response. According to reports from radio station RPP, Boluarte was not present at her residence in the Lima district of Surquillo during the raid.
Officials from Boluarte’s office were not available for immediate comment.
The investigations began two weeks ago following media reports suggesting that the president possessed multiple Rolex watches. The initial inquiry aimed to determine if there were grounds for launching a formal investigation against Boluarte.
Having assumed office in December 2022, Boluarte has publicly acknowledged owning Rolex watches, attributing their purchase to earnings accumulated since her youth.
Addressing the media report earlier this month, Boluarte asserted her integrity, stating that she entered the president’s office with clean hands and intended to leave with clean hands.
Attempts by the prosecutor’s office to inspect the watches at Boluarte’s office on Wednesday were unsuccessful. Her legal team cited scheduling conflicts and requested to reschedule the appointment.
The inquiry into Boluarte marks the continuation of a series of investigations targeting Peruvian presidents and high-ranking officials.
