Rio de Janeiro Police Hunt Woman Accused of Poisoning Boyfriend to Death
Police in Rio de Janeiro are searching for Júlia Cathermol, who allegedly poisoned her boyfriend, Luiz Ormond, just days after they were seen kissing in an elevator.
Ormond was found dead in his apartment on May 20 after neighbors reported a foul odor. Investigators believe Cathermol poisoned brigadeiros, a traditional Brazilian dessert, which Ormond had consumed. Although the autopsy did not determine the cause of death, chocolate residue was found in his digestive tract.
Ormond's decomposing body was discovered on a living room sofa, with a head injury mark. Two fans were left on, including one facing an open window. Police also found a pack of morphine in the apartment.
Neighbors last saw Ormond with Cathermol on May 17. Surveillance footage from the elevator showed Ormond holding a plate, believed to contain the poisoned brigadeiros, while Cathermol held a bottle. The couple kissed and chatted with another woman before exiting the elevator. Another camera recorded Cathermol returning to the apartment on May 19, where she stayed through the weekend, leaving with suitcases on May 20.
On Wednesday, police arrested Suyane Breschak, a friend of Cathermol, for allegedly helping dispose of Ormond's belongings, including a car sold for $14,000. Breschak claimed the money was used to pay off Cathermol's $115,000 debt. She revealed that Cathermol, who worked as a prostitute, hired her as a "spiritual mentor" to conceal her true profession from former boyfriends and family.
Breschak said Cathermol called her after Ormond's death, asking her to wrap his body in sheets and blankets and turn on the fans due to the smell. Cathermol reportedly used bleach to clean the apartment and mentioned vultures appearing at the window.
A man who purchased Ormond's car in Cabo Frio showed police a handwritten note proving the transfer. He was found with Ormond's laptop and cellphone and was arrested for possession of stolen property.
