Vice-Admiral (rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the sole administrator of Rivers State, has announced the resignation of the state’s Head of Service, George Nwaeke, and the appointment of a new Secretary to the State Government (SSG). The development follows the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by President Bola Tinubu, who declared a state of emergency in the state on March 18 due to escalating political tensions.

Vice-Admiral Ibas described Nwaeke’s resignation as a sad development but expressed gratitude for his contributions within a short period. He extended his best wishes to Nwaeke in his future endeavors. The permanent secretary (welfare) in the office of the head of service will assume the role in an acting capacity until a new head of service is appointed. Ibas congratulated the acting HoS on his new role and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining stability, neutrality, and peace in Rivers State.

In addition to these changes, Ibas announced the appointment of Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika as the new Secretary to the State Government. The selection of Worika was based on his credentials, experience, and performance during a rigorous selection process. Ibas emphasized that the appointment reflects his commitment to leveraging the state’s human capital to achieve peace, security, and stability.

Prof. Worika, a globally recognized scholar from the Okirika area of Rivers, is a legal expert and administrator with a strong track record in public service and institutional leadership.

The state of emergency declared by President Tinubu resulted in the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly for an initial six-month period. Vice-Admiral Ibas was subsequently appointed as the sole administrator to oversee the affairs of the state during this period. The declaration was made in response to escalating tensions between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The rift between the two political figures began approximately six months after Fubara assumed office and was reportedly linked to disputes over the political structure of the state.
