Six Strangled Bodies Found in Acapulco Resort, Mexico Amid Ongoing Violence
The bodies of four men and two women were discovered late Monday in Acapulco, a popular Pacific coast resort in Mexico. The victims were found on a street with their hands tied behind their backs, according to prosecutors from the southern state of Guerrero.
Their identities and the motive for the killings remain under investigation.
This grim discovery adds to the spate of deadly violence in Acapulco, which is still reeling from the devastation caused by Category 5 Hurricane Otis in October. The hurricane resulted in at least 52 deaths and inflicted severe damage on most of the area's hotels.
Just last week, five dismembered bodies were found scattered on a street in Acapulco. One of the victims was a candidate for a town council seat in the nearby town of Coyuca de Benítez. In early May, the head of traffic police in Acapulco was shot to death. In February, the strangled bodies of two men were discovered on the popular Condesa beach.
Prosecutors noted that the men's bodies showed signs of "torture by ligature" with "signs of torture around the neck." It is common for Mexican drug gangs to asphyxiate their victims, either by strangulation or using duct tape or plastic bags.
