Son stabs mom to death as she 'got on his nerves' - despite 'eight out of 10' relationship

Emmanuel Espinoza reportedly confessed to stabbing his mom to death

A college student has been charged with first-degree murder after he drove to his mother's house and stabbed her multiple times, citing that "she got on my nerves," according to Florida authorities.

Emmanuel Espinoza, 21, traveled around 165 miles (266 kilometers) from the University of Florida in Gainesville to Frostproof, Florida, for a family gathering. Upon reaching his mother's home, he immediately began stabbing her as soon as she opened the door, as reported by Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Sheriff Judd stated that Espinoza then called 911 and confessed to the crime. His mother, Elvia Espinoza, 46, was on a call with another family member during the assault.

Espinoza's confession included statements like, "You know, I have wanted to kill my mother for many, many years because she got on my nerves," as quoted by Judd. The Sheriff also noted that Espinoza described his relationship with his mother as about an eight out of 10, expressing both love and irritation.

Judd described the incident as a "horrible event" and a "very sad day" marked by an inexplicable and vicious murder. He mentioned that the victim was a beloved second-grade teacher in the community, adding, "He knocked on the front door, and when mom opened the door, he began to stab her many times."

Elvia worked at Frostproof Ben Hill Griffin Jr. Elementary, where she was cherished by her students and colleagues. The school district mourned her loss, stating, "Her sudden, unexpected death is a devastating loss for her school family."

The school has reached out to the parents of all her students and provided grief counselors. Online tributes honoring Elvia's memory have flooded in, with people expressing their fond memories of her cheerful demeanor and dedication to teaching.
