South Africa’s ex-president Zuma escapes unharmed from car crash
South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma narrowly escaped a potentially fatal car accident when a drunk driver collided with the vehicle transporting him, according to police reports.
The incident occurred shortly after electoral officials disqualified Zuma from participating in the upcoming May 29 general elections. A 51-year-old man was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal province for drunk driving, as well as reckless and negligent driving, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed on Friday.
The collision involved the suspect's car and Zuma's official armoured state vehicle, leading to the suspect's scheduled court appearance on Tuesday, as stated by SAPS.
Zuma, aged 81, and his security personnel emerged unharmed from the accident. The former president, associated with the ruling African National Congress (ANC), has been actively campaigning for the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, aiming to revive his political career following his 2021 imprisonment for contempt of court.
Allegations surfaced regarding the intentional nature of the car collision, with MK spokesman Nhlamulo Ndhlela suggesting foul play. Ndhlela criticized the lack of vehicle upgrades within the police minister's protection unit and implied a targeted attack on Zuma's car within the motorcade.
The incident reflects escalating political tensions in South Africa ahead of the elections, with the ANC facing challenges due to economic downturns, corruption accusations, and diminishing voter support.
