Suspect in Custody After Reported Shooting at Georgia High School; Casualties Confirmed
A suspect is in custody following reports of an active shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. The incident has resulted in casualties, though details on the number and condition of those affected have not been disclosed.
A local hospital is treating patients with gunshot wounds, according to a source at the facility. The Georgia State Patrol confirmed their response to the active scene at the school.
Video footage from the scene showed a significant law enforcement presence, with at least five ambulances and a medical helicopter airlifting a patient. Students and others were seen gathering on a football field, where some appeared to be praying. The FBI has deployed special agents to assist local authorities.
Apalachee High School, part of the Barrow County School System, has been cleared, and parents have been notified to pick up their children. Transportation will be provided for students in need.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has directed state resources to assist at the scene and urged prayers for the safety of those in classrooms across the state.
Winder, located about an hour outside Atlanta, has a population of approximately 18,338. The Barrow County School System is the 24th largest in Georgia, with Apalachee High School serving nearly 2,000 students.
