Teacher arrested after using AI to impersonate voice of principal making racist comments

Dazhon Darien, right, was accused of using AI to make it sound like Eric Eiswert, left, was making offensive remarks

A teacher was arrested for using artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic his school principal's voice and make racist and anti-Semitic remarks about students and staff. Dazhon Darien, a PE teacher and athletics director at a Maryland high school, allegedly created a fake audio clip of principal Eric Eiswert in January.

According to police, Mr. Darien employed cloning technology to fabricate the clip where Mr. Eiswert seemed frustrated with black students' test-taking abilities. The clip, widely circulated on social media, featured a voice resembling Mr. Eiswert's, criticizing black students and expressing dissatisfaction with Jewish individuals and two Jewish teachers at the school.

Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough stated, "We now have conclusive evidence that the recording was not authentic. It’s been determined that the recording was generated using artificial intelligence technology."

Mr. Eiswert had raised concerns about Mr. Darien’s conduct, including allegations of misusing school funds and hiring an unhelpful assistant coach. There were also reports of clashes between Mr. Eiswert and Mr. Darien over firing a coach without approval.

As Mr. Darien's contract faced possible non-renewal, he allegedly created the fake recording of Mr. Eiswert in retaliation. Mr. Eiswert denied the recording's authenticity and has been on paid leave since it surfaced.

Baltimore County Public Schools Superintendent Myriam Rogers remarked, “As you could imagine, this has been a tough time for [the] Pikesville High School community, principal Eiswert and his family.”

Mr. Darien faces charges including disrupting school activities, theft, retaliation against a witness, and stalking. He was apprehended at the airport while preparing to fly to Houston. Police did not comment on whether he planned to flee Maryland.
